Medical and psychological assessment is a key component to make a psychiatric diagnosis. Psychiatric diagnosis is based on history, examinations (general and systemic), and investigations. Investigations in psychiatry are mostly done to exclude the organic pathology.

Without a medical background, a psychiatric diagnosis is a difficult one and may lead to the wrong way. So, medical assessment is essential to exclude organic or medical diseases. Psychological assessment is important to explore the psychological signs and symptoms.

A mental state examination (MSE) is unique in psychiatry and should be done by an expert psychiatrist.
